DAY .. 3. September - 2003 - A little more....
Just got to write a few more words now that I have found my bed and kissed my wife a few times... :-)
Yes it was great. I drove 2200km and sat on a ferry for 28 hours. The conditions was not perfect with plenty wind and rain showers. It went MANY models in both starts, mid-airs and maybe moisture ? Even my own model was not spared after a mid-air just after the start in one round. I also got a servo breakdown so for many this event had plenty of action. But hey that's what it is all bout. Being prepared and go thru a whole event with no "missing in action".
There was not the air of Finland with good thermals but every round the treeline gave enough lift to take out those guys that went their own way. I remember Jane (my spotter from Samba) saying to me: "Are you sure you want to go left instead of right on the treeline?"..... She should have banged me in the head with that line a few more times. Mostly the planes went to the treeline with wind into it and soared back and forward until they were last in the sky. Many rounds were flown below 10 minutes and it was good to see that 2nd final gave Tony Vale the win by flying and not landing points. In the finals the last meter of landing gave 95, 96, 97, 98, 99 and 100points for each 20cm but this was not needed thank god. I personally hope that we can use the 2x75m start in F3J in the future.....
BTW after the midnight chucky I took out my uncles flying electric wing and made some midnight flights. The tree-elephants grabbed my wing at over 20m. The fire department at the Gilze-Rijen airbase had to blow it down with waterpower from their big trucks!!!
It was actually cool to see the tree-elephant had to release the model and it was blown out of the tree... See the pictures...
     DAY ..
28-31. August - 2003 -
73 Pictures is HERE
Short report from Hollandglide (more when I get home as I have taken 260 pictures and some video).
For the first time I have been to Hollandglide.
First of all let me thank all the people that wished me good luck for this event by email and SMS. It was well appreciated and nice to see that so many look at the pages AND wishes me good luck. I did not by a looong mile win the Hollandglide but I DID WIN the Midnight Chucky. This was a midnight DLG/HLG contest in the middle of the night with lights on our planes. I was not the pilot with the longest flight but I did make 2 loops in the same flight and did throw DLG-style with my "Mini-phønix".
So what did I do wrong ? Well after 8+10 hours of driving and long ferry trip I was tired, took some chances (landed twice outside 75m and took restart with other model) and broke another servo on the Brio (the third of this kind.....). But I did get a 999,8? with the Pike Brio and that was a good feeling between the problems. All in all I can look back at one event that gave me prices and gave me plenty of things to think about (mistakes that must be corrected).
The Hollandglide was very nice and I loved the event and to see all my friends and new friends there. I think it was 126 competitors on the list
(120 flew) and we had 6 preliminary and 2 finals to conclude that England IS BACK!
Tony Vale stole the trophy with his Pike Superior in front of Jaroslav Vostrel from Samba.
Hollandglide was well organized with plenty of helpers (we took the time our self) and there was no trouble to mention what so ever. We flew mostly 11-13 pilots in each slot and there was 12 pilots in the final. The weather was not with us all the time but as I mentioned 6 rounds + finals in two days is fast and smooth. Congratulations to the organizers for a well prepared event. I will also like to mention the girls on the field that did a marvellous job to keep us smiling and separate prizes for the many juniors. Did I mention a female athlete in fifth place!!!!!!! I think you will find the results at Hollandglide.nl soon

     DAY .. 28-31. August - 2003
I am leaving for Hollandglide, Eurotour F3J. This is the biggest F3J-competition there is.
Since I didn't get to go for European Championship this is my goal this year. Wish me good luck!

I will be flying with the Czech team and depend on their help. Should be fun!
Luckily Jane from Samba know a bit English...

     DAY .. 24. August - 2003
Just a few miles away from the flying field there are a good slope that we wanted to try. The wind should normally be south here but there is also a North slope that was ok. It was not perfect landing conditions here but we all found a suitable place to finish of our flights. Me and 4 others had a superb flying session and I flew the Brio and a new Vector prototype that worked very well. Actually it worked so well that when I by accident turned it off before start it flew for several minutes before it crashed on the back of the hill.
Vector is a foam/EPP flying wing that flyes gentle and easy for most people. The new "Vector Zero" should also DS ok and can also be equipped with a small electric motor. The new model is now called "Vector zero" (name by Finn Krogvig) because of its zero washout compared to the original. BTW the CG was found to be best at 210-215mm.
The Vector Zero can be ordered from http://www.flying-start-rc-models.com

More photos here (some of are taken by Espen G. Bakke, the man who produces the Vector)

     DAY .. 23. August - 2003
Competition day and we started at 11:00. There was a bit wind that changed with more thermals during the day. I mostly headed for the nearest slope and found thermals on the way there except one of the flights. This flight I found a thermal that was ok but wanted to check out Inge Balswick that was heading another direction in a smaller thermal. That was a mistake and I fell down a little bit to early. NEVER leave good air.... Anyhow I did get to the finals won them both with a good margin. The flight times was not the best as one needed a good start to be sure of reaching the slopes but I was always first of the line (I normally go when I feel I have enough or when first man zoom of).
After I had got a big trophy from the CD Pål Vindfallet we had a good time flying full size DG-500 (not me) and watching a Yak-52 and a Birddog flying acro over the field. In the evening we had some barbeque again.
BTW I flew the Pike Superior all rounds (4+2).
Results and Nor. txt can be found HERE

     DAY .. 22. August - 2003
On my way to Nome airport and some F3J-cup. Today we had some practice at the field and I flew the Pike Brio. The wind was pretty strong and it was possible to slope fly on a nearby hill (apx 800m away). There was plenty of pilots practicing today and we were 9 pilots for the barbeque in the evening.

     DAY .. 20. August - 2003
Nice weather again and 12m/s wind on the slope at Storefjell.
Not the perfect direction but I had a nice flight for over 30min with the Pike Brio X-tail.

     DAY .. 17. August - 2003
Per Arne still here and today we had visitors from Porsgrunn. One of them (Geir Strømstad) wanted to buy my oldest Pike Superior so we set up the winch on a local field so that he could get the first starts and some quality flying. The model off course worked well as always and a big grin could be seen on his face!
He even managed some spot on landings right away. We also flew his friends K2 and I flew my own Superior. Per Arne also got a flight with his Graphite. We did have to stop for a few minutes for some rain (see the rainbow) that did not come but we had some good flights and some thermals.

Ållebergstevlingen 2004
Scandinavias biggest event (F3B-T)
-----------------------

     DAY .. 16. August - 2003
My uncle Per Arne were here for some flying and we went to a local field for some winch flying. I flew the Superior X-tail and have never seen so many flies atracted by the yellow Superior (see picture). Nice weather and lots of thermals today. I even had over 50 loops without loosing altitude!

     DAY .. 12. August - 2003
Just a small session of flying at a nearby slope just up for Fagernes
with the PIKE Brio. The V-tail fuse I crashed the other month was repaired so that I can use it if necessary. It worked out ok but I changed to the X-tail after 20min of flying and flew another 20min. I really am hooked on the X-tail and the "neutral" CG that I use now. Thanks Gordy - You have made me think of many things a whole new way.

     DAY .. 10. August - 2003
Started early and after 270km and apx 3 hours of fun driving with my mothers cabriolet I arrived at Flittig (the airport of the model club Vingen). First people said was that it was cool that I made the trip but why no planes ?? Out from the small car I took my Organic... It was said that I was going to spot for many of the Vingen pilots today. So I did without thinking so much of the 28 degrees outside. After a couple of hours I was dehydrated! But it went ok and I think some of the pilots appreciated the spotting.
Before the competition I got one flight with the Organic and it was not in as good trim as I wanted. There was not enough elevator control but it flew ok and the competition went well until every landing. I also did a mistake when calculating the remaining time in round 3 and lost a few seconds there. This came up when the results were put into Egil Roland's pc.. I got beaten by Espen Gjardar Bakke but got second place only 3 points behind. There were 14 competitors and I think I should be happy with the results. After all I flew a plane apx 20dm smaller than Espen.
I also have to tell you about the other guys. There were pilots from all over the area and lots of new faces were seen. They were all very nice guys and during the day we had some good laughs. The flying area was not perfect so bad launch heights or not spotting the thermal immediately made it extremely difficult to stay up. There was high trees all around and the wind came from every direction you could think of. So the landings were really "spaced out" for some of us. Happily there was no real crash other than one of the guys not turning on... The plane came down so gentle and nice!!!!

BTW Have you seen the nice slope at the Lyngås motorsports field ?? Picture

     DAY .. 9. August - 2003
I was not going to fly today BUT. Tomorrow I will go to LSF competition (3x7min thermal). This because I got to borrow my mothers Mercedes CLK200 (cabriolet 2 seats). This meant that there was no room for my Pike as there is practically no space in this car. But I did get to fit my Organic behind the seats. But the Organic had not been flown as sailplane after the crash last month. So in the light of the stars I flew a few turns at my mothers place before it was packed in the car.

     DAY .. 8. August - 2003
It is hot (28 degrees) but in the mountains the temperature is better. So I went to Klanten in the evening to cool down a bit. The winch was set up and at 21:30 I had 5 long flights with the Superior in the calm and hot air. BTW reports say that some of the guys at WC F3B only use 2mm start flap in the hot and thin air. So I just had to test that. Hook further back and testing was done. The Lolo said there was no diff. in start height...

     DAY .. 7. August - 2003
The local airfield of the club has a solar panel that was not doing the job so I went and fixed it. It seemed that a cell in the battery was dead so I changed the battery. The local club's airfield is only 120m long so I went to nearby slope instead and flew the PIKE Brio. The conditions were typical thermal with 5m/s and thermals lifting me to great heights. In the back the DS worked every time a thermal had gone thru (with strong wind after).

     DAY .. 6. August - 2003
Klanten airport and some winch practice with PIKE Brio and a new elevator. I had cut 3cm of each elevator to get less drag but still good control. A pilot taking of from Klanten ( LN-NPO ) were really concerned if I was member - allowed to fly here - etc.... Typical. They don't say who they are but wants us RC-pilots to stand upright for them. I think he is member of the board at NLF as I met him in March at our yearly meeting. What did I do ? Well I stud upright and answered all his questions. I had a key to the gate - not him :-) Anyhow he soon disappeared and I could do my thing. It was good conditions with lots of thermals but also big sink between them. I flew 6 long flights (2 of them with lead and some speed flying) before I went home. The elevator worked just fine and I think I will fly with this elevator every time I use the X-tail and Brio.

     DAY .. 5. August - 2003
The local slope near Fagernes was used today. Both the Superior and the Brio was in action about half an hour each. Good lift - mostly thermals. I flew the Brio with CG at 118mm and the Superior at 118 and 120mm. Remember this is only possible by an experienced pilot and with X-tail.

     DAY .. 3. August - 2003
Wanted to relax today but 5m/s steady wind made me cruise up into the mountains. I ended up at Beitostølen flying DS with my PIKE Brio. It was a pretty good day with 5m/s wind and steady conditions back in the DS (Dynamic Soaring). I have made a small Video in Windows Media format (0,5mb). It will not stay on the server forever....

     DAY .. 2. August - 2003
Competition day and the possibility to be Club Champion in electro-thermal. We fly 3x12minutes and the motor time is withdrawn from the flight time. It is possible to use diff. motors and cells because of some handicap rules. In my Organic I have 6 cells and a 3-phase motor equipped with a 17x13prop (10m/s upwards). My uncle Per Arne wanted to let my try his Graphite electro in the comp. so I did. This machine is 3,1m an equipped with 10cells it goes 13m/s upwards. First round I used only 8 seconds of motor and after 3 rounds I had used only 8+16+9 seconds to fly the 3x12 minutes. I also landed OK (you cant bang these things to the ground...) and I won the whole event with a plane I had only flown a few times before :-) Thanks for the borrowing Per Arne!

     DAY .. 1. August - 2003
Arrived at Spydeberg at 14:00 and ready for some practice with electro. Per Arne and Alf Erik was there and we flew some flights and discussed some theories about "neutral" CG. That means what I am trying to achieve with my planes at the moment. I am trying to decrease the EWD (ElevatorWingDifference) so that the plane will fly neutral both straight and upside down. This can be done when you have a full flying stab. Just change the CG (center of gravity) until the plane flies both ways. I have found that I want my plane to fly straight upside down with speed flap on. It is a little bit difficult subject to explain and maybe not anything for all pilots to test. To do this will not make your plane fly much further and you will maybe not stay up there longer. But I think it will maybe make it easier to spot thermals and the response on the input is greater. BTW This is not possible with a fixed tail. Today I flew the Organic a few flights and the Superior one flight.

January - Not extremely much flying this month but many flights with many planes. Biggest of the month was the new video "Pike-launch". It should be well worth the download of 13,5mb
February
- What a trip we had. 10 days in Europe visiting many of the finest developers. Learned incredibly much.
March - Back from the trip and tested the new X-tail for Superior. Came third in the first event with 24 comp. Majko was cool and Fagernes Flyshow was a spectacular event with over 100 pilots.
April - Great month and the spring is coming. Pike Mini with Superior tips is great - Great DS in Haugesund - and first session this year on my local DS-slope.
May - Wow what a month. Jean was here - speed training - Yellow Eagle Trophy - Spacewolf and most important my new Pike Brio. I think I am ready for the summer now!
June - Jihaa! I got to be National champion F3J for the second time. I was also practising a lot with my new Brio and went to Ørebro Open (Eurotour F3B). I also became Club Champion in the club Cirrus.
July - Got gold medal in the Team and 7th overall in Nordic Championship. Crashed my Brio in F3B and had plenty of friends stopping by for longer and shorter time. New personal best of 17,68s in speed F3B and my first flight with Paraglider. Also pretty irritating that I am not at EC F3J....
August - 3x12 electro (1st), LSF at Vingen (1st), F3J at Nome (1st) and Hollandglide F3J (did not win..). But a great month with lots of flying and lots of good feedback from Hollandglide.
September - This month I was into some more "speedy" flying. Nationals in F3F, F3B and Scaleplanes (slope distance). But also the last F3J-cup this year. F3F was ok but can be better. F3B was great with 4th place and 2nd overall in the league. Scale sailplanes Nationals was good with 2nd place (silver). In the last F3J I came 2nd behind a swede and by that I have won the National league for the second year in a row.
