X5J eXtreme tomorrow
PRACTICE DAY
I actually thought the competition was today but anyhow I flew like
it was competition and found some good points to fix for tomorrow.
OK I screwed up together with the weather on the practice....
Before the competition I had found that I needed 15-18sec of
motorrun but since it was snowing I went for 20sec. First round was
ok with 20seconds climb and the model almost disappearing in the
clouds (logger crap but apx 370m). Had good altitude coming in for
landing and model stopped to easy in the 7cm snow. -7 degrees
celcius made us go for a coffee before the next round and I charged
in the car. Did not think about the battery heat, just plugged it in
and the power was terrible...
After 22seconds of climb (217m according to logger) I took my
chances but it also disappeared in the snow/clouds so I had to work
hard to find it! Ended up with using another 5 seconds motortime
after 8:30 and therefore no landing points. This could have been
dangerous if I had lost the model as it was over the city. Third
round I off course took the battery straight of the hard charge
(6,5A) to get the battery hot. 19 seconds climb and a good landing
to finish the day.
So snow in the air, no sun, low clouds and not a hot battery is not
a good combination.
Practice details: Round 1: 10:01 3-4m 20s , Round 2: 10:00 27s ,
Round 3: 9:59 19s 1-2m , -7 celcius (19F)

X5J eXtreme in 2 days
6cm of snow but that does not stop me I guess... Yesterday
we tried to start Arild's big DA50 gasoline engine with no luck. It
just did not get any fuel. Today I needed to fly even though went
really bad when I finally entered the ice. Pulled out the Graphite
and while that one charged I flew a little 3DX mini. As you see even
with flash the slow flying Graphite was too fast! -7 celcius today
and even long after the sun had gone down the thermals were pretty
strong and I even climbed a few times.

X5J eXtreme in 4 days
Cold outside with -12celcius (10F) but YES I was outside
practicing for this weekends F5J eXtreme. Since there is a new rule
on testing I needed to know how much motortime I needed to get 10
minutes with the Graphite and just how my sinkrate was with
different flap settings in the cold winter conditions. It was
differences today so I tried to fly the same pattern all 3 flights
to get a good reading out of my logger. So what did I find? Well
18seconds motortime gave me 300m+ all flights on the same charge and
that is enough for 10minutes flights in todays conditions.
Differences in climbrate is huge because of the cold offcourse
(13-19m/s). The sinkrate was beetween 0,33 and 0,76 and as expected
sometimes coming low in more turbulent air needed less camber.
Average sinkrate was 0,54 but last flight I hit the camberspot and
got 0,4. I also fly much better under 150m because the light is
better so the model is easier to see (the light now midwinter is
poor). So conclusion is that I need 15-20seconds motortime. Want to

Yet another day with flying on the ice. Two flights with my
Adrenaline and since it was no wind and only a few minus I had a
good time. Plenty of guys on the ice today. About time I get out the
winch now...

25.December 2005
We always fly first christmas day and so this year also. I
flew my Adrenaline and Arild flew his Mini Katana. We met up with
plenty of other guys and had a few good hours before we were too
cold to fly. A little movie HERE
for the clubmates (25mb). The "Mig" shown in the video touching the
ground does 201km/h according to video meassurment.

Merry Christmas!
Here are two Christmas gifts from me to you:

Indoor in the evening and the full test of Arild's new 3DX
mini. We built his with a bit more 6mm than mine but it seems to
perform very similar. Since his fuse is halfway 6mm we did not need
the extra depron on the tail so I think the weight is the same
though we have not meassured. His became very cool with red ailerons
btw...

Very little flying lately so a trip out with a onboard
camera on my Adrenaline was fun.

14.December 2005
YES finally some real flying. Took my bungee and flew the
Pike Giant 4 flights with 2 of them +10min since there were some
good lift here and there to lengthen the flights. It is so nice to
fly thermal again and have to do an effort to not only fly longer
but know when to get home.

DAY ..
13.December 2005
Limited time with good light but I got a flight with the
Graphite today on the local football field. Nice and green place at
the moment ;-) I also took a photo a maybe good solution to the lack
of X-tail on the Graphite. A Samba Pike fuse and some Graphite wings
makes a very light and good combination maybe... Have to make some
holes in that wing first.

DAY ..
11.December 2005
Some warm winds in over the country so I took the Graphite
just to discover that some servos were loose. So I ended up flying
3DX instead. At least I did a pre-check ;-)

DAY ..
9.December 2005
Indoor again and testing of Arild's Raven indoor. It flew
okay but not more. It will fly 3D but is too heavy to fly nimble.
But for the price it an ok model that will do most of the tricks
including hover and some of the best snaps I have seen. I flew my
3DX a lot and emptied 3 batteries.

6.December 2005
Building in Arild's place a few days and the creation is now
finished. When we visited the shop of Martinsen Hobby some time ago
we found a "Raven" depron model that was ridiculously cheap compared
to other models. Arild just had to buy one and it is now finished.
Weight ended up on 120g without wheels forgot to weigh after.
Standard indoor equipment and the wing contains one carbon rod in
the hingeline (we might add one more) and fuse is stiffened a bit
more than stock. First flight was outdoor in the street and showed
way forward CG. More testing is needed though it seems to have great
potential as a small 3D flyer! Hovering was anyhow pretty easy. It
is meant to be flown as a pylon racer with speed 300 with Gunther
prop. We installed a Klepaker 20turn and two cells 450mah and have
plenty of power I think. Might be better with 17turn though. We also
worked slightly on Arild's new Extra 2m with DA50 gasoline engine
and made a simple killswitch. This way we separate all electronic
and metal hardware by at least 10cm so that sparks does not get into
the Rx. Cool and very simple witch operated by a simple and cheap
HS80. Back home my wife and kid is making Christmas cookies.

DAY ..
2.December 2005
Indoor today though it was not a "good" day. I was a little
"unlucky" and ended up with blood all over... Luckily I did not need
any stitches ;-) Me, Arild and Tom Olav flew quite a lot and had a
good time. We all used the camera a bit. And Arild have bought a BIG
gas model! DA50, carbon prop and big enough to use as hat.... Maybe
I will sneak in one day and rob Arild of that model (and install
some proper electric...)
