DAY .. 28.December
2006
Out on the ice again and since the Extra is not in
action I pulled out the Diablo and the Joker helicopter.
Just before Christmas I had ordered lenses for my eyes
so today was a good day to test them while flying. I am
not happy with them but also the blinking of the eyes
and fluid coming over them seems to be bad for the
eyesight. Right now I think I will stay with my glasses.
Sadly I had several glitches with my Diablo and went
into the ice a bit hard. I have nearly finished the
repair after coming home but annoying to get glitches
without knowing why. I will have to check more on the
model later. Coming home checking the mail I was
surprised that after ordering a new 90A controller to
the Extra two days ago it was already in the mail. Very
good job from
Elefun
getting it to me this fast (no not sponsored). Hopefully
I can get the Extra in the air quick. Arild had some
nice action with his Velox today and Richard (from
www.rc-flight.com
) came to fly some as he is in the cabin for Christmas.
Sadly after I had left Richard fell hard on the ice and
broke his shoulder I think. He had to visit the doctor
so me and Arild took care of his car. Hope you get well
soon Richard!!!

2006 - Extra 300
Yet a day on the ice and I wanted to push the Extra 300
special a bit and work in a program. So I flew first one
flight of 12minutes and then was half way thru the
second flight when the power went of and black smoke
came from the model. Landed immediately off course and
opened it up to get the batteries out that I thought was
burning. But the batteries were fine feeling thru the
black smoke in the fuse. It was the
controller that
had burnt up after the hard flying. I use a Hacker 77
and it appears it does not have any heat protection that
I was sure of. I draw 85A on full power on the ground
and that should be well under 77A in the air (measured
with newly charged cells). According to Motocalc with
these cells I should have been on 76A and falling with
airspeed. There should also be sufficient air-cooling
since it was only 5celcius outside. On the other hand I had today been flying high
to practice flat spins (it was awsome on inverted flat
spins) so I had used a lot of full power straight up. I
have immediately ordered a 90A controller from another
company and dismantled the motor to check the windings
(it was ok). I also measured all the cells in the
battery prior and after charging to be sure nothing was
wrong. As always the EVO20 cells are doing a great job
and after many, many flights they still does not need
any balancing.
BTW remember the postal world event X5J eXtreme new
years day.

DAY .. 25.December
2006 - Extra 300 from
RC-flight.com
Yearly meeting as always the day after christmas day (we
celebrate the 24th here in Norway) and plenty of guys
showed up (9). I flew the Extra (2,14m) on electric
power and the VIP 400. Arild flew his Velox 2,6m with
smoke and the others various electric and fuel models.
Had 6 flights today on the Extra flying 8-10min each
time. Used apx 3-3600mah of the battery so I have plenty
of juice to go on even with the low temperature we had
today (-4 celcius = 25F). I should say that I have two
sets of batteries so while one charges I can fly the
other. I had set the voltage alarm from Peter Kirby on
apx 32volts and on full power it started to shine
brightly thru the canopy after 8-10min each time. So a
good indicator that it is time to think about landing.
Pictures with my mobile only so no super ones but ok.

DAY .. 23.December
2006 - Extra 300 from
RC-flight.com
Flew the Wild Hare Extra 300 special with electro power
and it was awsome. Not the same power as DA50 but not
bad at all. Enough power to accelerate out of hover and
the weight (7,6kg) compared to size is super for slow 3D
as if it was a foamy. My batteries (10s2p 5000mah) makes
it possible for atleast 12min flying full 3D and it
draws 85A on a 22x12 APC-E. I also flew my VIP 400.

DAY .. 21.December
2006 - Extra 300 from
RC-flight.com
Bought a used WildHare Extra 300 with DA-50 from a
friend and before the engine went out (Arild wanted
that) I had to fly it a couple of flights. Very nice and
stable plane just as I remembered it (flew a flight at
the airshow on the ice). First flight was a bit short as
the plug cap fell of just after the takeoff (in
Knife-edge) but I saved it nicely as this plane is maybe
not a sailplane but not far off... Had two long flights
using most of the 0,5l tank (that is a lot of flying
with this engine). It reminds me very much of the Katana
2M but is more gentle yet with the same quick response
if I want. Hovering is very easy with very little input
for a long time until it starts to rotate with the 23x8
prop. Engine was not fully run in so we took out
6350rpm. This one have had a small landing damage and
was fixed nicely but the wing tube in the fuse was a
little bit offset so the loops were not perfect. Later
in the evening I have taken out the tube and moulded a
new one. I have also installed my brushless Hacker
C50-14XL and all up weight seems to be 7,5kg in worst
case. Pictures by Arild

7,7kg with DA-50 (some carbon option parts)

Messy and cold on the hands!!!!! I like electric better

No sun in the valley but nice anyhow.

Fly by with low tail

Oops my Auster went in the wall! Rudder servo failed!
But fixed again now though not sure I am confident on
that servo.

DAY .. 19.December
2006
At the WC F3J in Martin, Slovakia I bought a cute little
freeflight model (Auster). This was now finally ready for maiden
with GWS motor and 2 cell Lipo. The total weight was
80,3g with heavy 300mah battery and overpowered in such
a way that it could go vertical I think. Have to make a
throttle curve on it or get a 1cell lipo from somewhere
as it was too much power. Would probably be a good pylon
model though.... It flew ok and I was actually spot on
with the freeflight CG. Very cute little thing! Only
real change was that I made a carbon undercarriage and
off course installed RC equipment instead of the rubber
power it was intended for.

DAY .. 18.December
2006
Very cold here now atleast when it the wind is blowing
on top of it. Have been in and out of the optician the
last days and testing new stuff for my eyes to make me
ready for the new season. I have also got a good bunch
of emails from producers with F3B models coming this
season. Thanks guys. Appreciated. But I have now managed
to order models for the winter and am not willing to be
testing models just before the WC. (ordered
Crossfire V ,
RaceM X
and
Skymax4 ) I
need the winter for hard practice as my ambitions is
probably higher than reachable just now. Expect full
training on this site as soon as the weather and ice
permits!! The ground is a bit hard now for the winchpegs
now. I might have drill some holes I guess..
But a thanks to Gunther ( models produced by:
www.jitom.com ).

DAY .. 15.December
2006
My VIP 400 was crashed some years ago so thought it was
time to get it in the air again. Earlier it has flown
with a Hacker B20 on 10 cells and 5x5 but now I squeezed
in an outrunner (BM2409-12) on 3 cell lipo and 6x5,5
prop. It flew well but the controller did cut on high
rpm's (diving).

DAY .. 14.December
2006
Went to a prizegiving / Christmas meeting in the club
Cirrus and received awards for club winner sailplanes
and the Cirrus cup.

DAY .. 13.December
2006
I have been searching for new F3B models for next
season. Samba is not ready with new F3B model for 2007
season (they are concentrating on more moulds for
Perfect) so I have
sent a bunch of emails with very few replies to other
producers in search of an F3B model. It should
be noted that both
Martin Webershock and
Markus Becker
have had good and fast replies! I appreciate that. I also
sent an email to Philip Kolb and my friend Espen Torp.
SO I am happy to say that I will try out both RaceM with
X-tail (
www.ET-AIR.com ) and Philip's new toy the
Skymax4. Philip
is making this model for himself and his team but will
also have one in good time (delivery Istanbul). Thanks
Philip. Much appreciated by me. On the RaceM I will have
to wait a month or two for the fuse but the wings are
ready and I will probably attach a spare Crossfire fuse
or X21 fuse I have.
Great day out on a field with my winch and the
Crossfire. I am down in a valley and now the sun does
not get down here. But non the less the thermals were
strong. I did 10 starts and the
last
3 were logged with the Zlog (plots
here). First log shows empty
with a little crosswind. The second I had full ballast
(not the joiner) and still good. I even spotted a strong
thermal in the landing and got a second go even with
800g of lead. In the last start I wanted to see how much
elevator I could pull and had a wingdrop (the elevator
stalls) so no zoom here. The Crossfire had not flown
since my last DS session (it fluttered and went down)
but is now 100% again. You can see I had to cut in a new
tip (thanks Egil) and make a new servo board.

DAY .. 9.December
2006
Went up to a frozen lake nearby to fly but the snow was
too deep and wet to fly the bigger planes. But I flew
the Joker 2 helicopter (both rolled and looped today)
and the Flatana from
RC-flight.com. Good to have something to fly when
one does not have a flying field. Did not take any
pictures.
BTW Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to all.

DAY .. 7.December 2006
- Diablo from
RC-flight.com
A bit too much snow on the football field and Arild
broke of the undercarriage on his new Edge that flew ok.
Arild slowed it down as much as possible but even the
loose snow broke it of. Kind of funny as the
undercarriage is made of strong carbon but it brakes in
the poor wood in the fuse. Just like all the models in
this class.
The CG was a bit far behind but not possible to do it
otherwise without placing the battery with the motor I
think. I flew my Diablo and had fun. Works great on 4
cells though I might make a 5 cell just for extreme
punch out of hover. Just
banking the sticks for fun today and since it can be
slowed down to almost no speed the high snow was no
problem landing in. Takeoff was from my hand so that was
also just fun. Miss Blondie took the pictures for us.
Thanks ;-)
