DAY ..
31. January 2005
- Out in the garage AGAIN! 10-15m/s outside and not a slope nearby on that
wind direction. So I settled for the Shockflyer in the garage... Anyhow I
wanted to test the Shockflyer on 2 cells and the AXI2204/54. On 8x4 GWS prop
it had enough power to hover but not for much climbout. But with a 9x5 GWS
(HD version) it had a nice climbout. Probably even better on a 9x3,8. Used
2x700mah LiPo and empty weight 135g it is nice. The wind is so strong
outside that I cant sustain a long hovering. Even inside the garage this
light model is pushed around in the wind.
DAY ..
30. January 2005
- Blowing hard outside so I did some hovering in the garage. But not as fun
as outside.... The Shockflyer is now equipped with the AXI2204/54. It is a
great little motor :-)

28. January 2005 NATS
- Never liked Paypal after I tried it some
years ago. But that was because there was some talk about scams on the net. Now it
seems that everybody uses it and I have registered again. It does cost a few
percentage to receive money but it can take Visa etc.
This summer I will hopefully go to the Nats in USA (Nationals) but need
funds. Some of my readers have wanted to donate some money to keep me flying
and writing so here it is :-) I do sell some Pike`s but the income is not
enough to go travelling much (basically get models for myself). So if you like
my site or like me to go travelling, donate a Euro or two to my paypal
account.

28. January 2005
- Indoor as usual every Friday. I used up 3 packs and a total of 1300mah on
my shockflyer. That means 35minutes of flying. Ended up ripping of the motor
mount but only 5min of gluing and it will be ready again. My son really
wanted to fly.. Maybe I should make a indoor model that is easy to fly...
DAY ..
28. January 2005
- 4 degrees celcius but nice on ice with sunshine and just the small moving
air from very small thermals. I had a nice time with my Brio until my back
said stop. In good air I could fly with 11mm thermal camber but mostly I
flew with 3mm. Times were 5-10min (150m line on the winch) all depending on
if I found that good air. Had to be very careful on the sticks and keep the
plane on level wings.
DAY ..
25. January 2005
Just a small flight with Shockflyer. Ok it does seem that my very small prop
makes hovering a bit more difficult. It is plenty of power but not enough
airflow for a stable and controllable hover. A few background pictures from
the last days (right click and "use as background") instead of flying
pictures...

Two extras today:
- Remember:
F5J EXTREME II 2005 Feb12 and13 signup.
-
Got an email from an F3J friend in Italy. He has started production of a F3J
pulley. Price is apx.60EUR + shipping. Have added it to the
equipment
page at F3X.no

24. January 2005
- It is cold today with -10 celcius. But I received
some props from Japan that I had to test on my Shockflyer. In my Shockflyer
I currently have a Klepaker Extreme 17T and 3x450mah E-tec. With the 8x4 HD
from GWS I have just too much power and I wanted to test a smaller prop
before I buy some 2 cells instead. So I attached a 7x3,5 HD and meassured.
It gave 5,8A after 1min of flying and 11500rpm (I wanted to measure after
the top voltage had been shaved off). It now hovers at apx 60-70% throttle
and that suits me just fine. The power out of hover is now slower but more
"normal". Takes a bit of time to get used to the higher rpm but the motor
now runs at a better efficiency and hopefully I can have longer flights.
DAY ..
23. January 2005
- A bit cold today (-7 celcius) but just had to get
out the winch and the Brio. Had 3 long flights and they were great. Could
have flown a lot longer but aimed for 10min each flight and left the good
air at 5min. This meant I had to find something more and I did 2 out of 3
times. Finished of with a speedrun. To see the thermals one just watched for
shimmering over the ice and the way the wind blew. Just for the record.. I
use 4x2100mah NiMh in my Brio and after 35min of flying the voltage was
still above 5,2v when I used the stick :-) But the camera was jabbering about voltage (original 4x1700mah NiMh).
DAY ..
21. January 2005
- Same day as last session but indoor... I flew my
Shockflyer mostly but also the SX3. But I was missing a good propeller for
it (have now ordered directly from Japan instead of the locals in
Norway....). I flew my Shockflyer for almost 20min on a 450mah pack. This is
rather good I think since I use a Klepaker that is known to use a lot of
power. But as long as it sits in a light machine it seems that the amps go
way down. Arild was also there and flew his Lierider and the Vertigo
(picture)
DAY ..
21. January 2005
- I have been out flying several days but mostly
Shockflyer and SX3. Only short flights when I had time for it. Today the
flying field on the ice was made ready by me and Arild. Now we have 500x40m
++++ and a ice skating course. Before the sun went down I managed to fly
10min with my shockflyer.
DAY ..
14. January 2005
- Indoor as always on Fridays. I brought my
Shockflyer and the Lierider and had a good time. The Shockflyer is
much better than the Lierider at most hovering, loops etc. though I
need a bit higher speed in knifeedge. The reason is offcourse that
the Lierider have more wing area and drag so it can fly slower. My
Lierider (one of them) was sold to Kjell Arne that really needed a
good indoor model. He and his friend brought 3 models but none of
them were really suited for indoor flying (Taub, Tiger Moth and
T3D). Arild was there with his Lierider and is getting really good
at hovering. He had some problems with his batteries and either the
batteries or his charger. Otto was there also and had a spin with
his Moth. It is plain too heavy with the supplied motor.
DAY ..
14. January 2005
- Perfect weather for some winch on the ice. But
before the sun went behind the hill (I had sun from 11:30-12:45 I think) I
had a maiden flight with some great shots of the new Shockflyer Extrema
330s. I built it pretty light with 6g servos and a new E-tec LiPo battery
that is 3 cells 450mah and weighs in at 36g. This plane got me wonder. Why
is it so much better than my 3DX mini ???? Anyhow it was 186g compared to my
last Shockflyer that was 220g. Not much of a difference but it takes of the
ice in just under a meter and can probably fly in smaller places. When I
built this one I made it slightly different than the kit said. I placed the
aileron servo a bit higher so that the new and lighter battery could get
further ahead and took the pushrods on the top side for elevator/rudder.
This meant I could use 45 degrees depron (instead of the balsa provided) on
the bottom side and cover up both servos, Rx and the battery. The CG was not
meassured but it is apx 50mm from leading edge. I think I could feel that it
reacts more to the smallest wind gust. Afterwards I took out my Pike
Superior and had some really nice flights with even thermals that made it go
up if I worked them gently.
DAY ..
13. January 2005
- A small flight outside with maybe the last flight
for my 3DX since a new Shockflyer has been built on the living room table. I
also had a flight with the SX3 with a 8x6 propeller just to confirm how bad
is it to hover with too much pitch on the propeller (I got some wrongly sent
props)
DAY ..
12. January 2005
- The storms are entering Norway every day now so I
went to a nearby slope for some action. The Pike Brio was taken out with
some lead in the fuse. It was just above freezing point (+1 celcius) and
10m/s wind and I had a good time. After 30min of flying both frontside and
some DS I landed and felt my fingers. I wasnt cold at all so I tossed the
model out and flew 10-15min more. Oh its great to be on the slope again and
the Brio is THE tool for me.
DAY ..
11. January 2005
- I was on the ice but not enough clothes and too
late in the day for some serious flying. So the 3DX was out. I was also out
in the dark with the 3DX and a new battery I have bought was used today. It
is the E-tec 450mah 3cell pack LiPo. I was amazed by the size of this thing.
It is much longer and more square packs than we are used to. This means that
it can be burried in the fuse of a shockflyer and does not get that cold in
the wind of the propeller. I was missing some good small propellers so I
took of 1cm on a 8x4 and that gives me above 10min flight time with the
Klepaker 17T. I flew 10min and the charger said 260mah... Thats good. I
think I will have too get some smaller props for 3 cells flying (7x4 or
something). I also made the fuse more rigid by depron in 45 degrees on the
top. It cost me 3g of depron... Now it was much easier to do knife edge
loops.
DAY ..
10. January 2005
- Just a small flight in the lunchtime with 3DX. Cant
wait to get a new shockflyer.
DAY ..
9. January 2005
- On the ice and removed some snow. Afterwards I had
a spin with the SX3. It was a small wind that came and went otherwise I
would have set up the winch. Maybe tomorrow... Few propellers left so I
fitted a 9x6 Graupner I had laying around. Great power but not good enough
for hovering stable. Need lower pitch...
DAY ..
8. January 2005
- Always wanted to fly in the garage... And since it
was snowing I got out my 3DX mini and moved the car ;-)
Just a small video HERE (3,2mb .wmv
with crash..)
DAY ..
7. January 2005
- Indoor again... I was alone flying but Tom Olav
came to join in on the fun. I flew my Lierider and 3DX mini. Back home my
son wanted to join in but he is 7 years and it will get too late for him. So
while I was flying he made a nice drawing for me. It is supposed to be me
flying with lights :-) BTW I have finally attached a servo to my camera.. So
now I can take pictures from distance by a switch on the Tx. Before I have
used the timer on the camera for all my pictures. As you see these pictures
is taken with zoom from the other side of the hall.
DAY ..
6. January 2005
- Ok I was out flying in the lunchbreak today also...
No pictures though. The 3DX got out for a spin. I also got a link to a cool
slope simulator. For first looks it does not do DS the same way as CRRSIM
but it does slope combat and if you have a friend on another computer you
can fly against him and fire rockets. Way cool. Just started to test it.
Link to
sim HERE. The sim is fixed by Adrie van Brouwershaven.
In need of a
USB interface ? I have met only nice people at
http://www.rc-electronics.co.uk/ These interfaces can be used on many simulators (check their website)
DAY ..
5. January 2005
- Went out for a club meeting (inside...) and had to
fly some SX3 and 3DX mini indoor. Video of the
SX3 indoor HERE (10mb .wmv). Beginning to get better at hovering
but that wall never attached to the SX3 and that door was difficult to get
thru :-) But with the 3DX mini I at least managed to get on that door... I
did not dare to go thru the door since it easily get damaged (only depron).
Video of 3DX mini HERE (7,7mb .wmv).
DAY ..
5. January 2005
- I was out flying some 3DX and a bit of Lierider.
But it was cold so I went in again and tried the Crrsim simulator and worked
it to fly some DS instead of F3F. Pretty cool and actually not so bad in
realism. I have put out the worked copy HERE.
I bought and early version of a
USB interface
that still works (but not on my EVO). It is connected to the old MPX Combi
80 I have.
DAY ..
3. January 2005
- Sorry about all the night shots but it is so cool
to explore it. Today I brought out the 3DX with Klepaker 17T with 2 cells
and 3 cells. With 2 cells 700Kokam it hovers at 50% with a 9x5HD and at 30%
with 3cells 360 and the same prop (never use full throttle...). I have to
adjust the CG a bit but to me it seems that the Shockflyer Edge is a much
better plane than the 3DX mini even though the 3DX is kind of a copy of the
Shockflyer. But it might be that my 3DX is setup much lighter and more aft
CG. Anyhow I cant wait to setup another Shockflyer with light equipment. BTW
the politicians have shut down the lights on the roads to save money. Good
for me as the pictures get better but bad for me also as I have to make more
lights on the model.
DAY ..
2. January 2005
- Wind today so I just had a small trip outside to
test the MTM 400XT motor in the SX3. The weight is now up in 310g but this
motor is great for the SX3 (Model 193g + motor and controller 61g + battery
1050mah 56g). I attached a small 8x4 prop and that draws 7A but with nice
vertical power.
Today I also fixed the broken rudder on my AVA with extra carbon rowing
under and attached the Klepaker motor on the 3DX mini. The 3DX was then
hovered in front of the christmas tree :-) Fredrik (my son) played with my
camera and made a lot video and some pictures. After almost 5min of hovering
I missed the grip and crashed in beetween some chairs but hey its nothing
some glue could not fix!
DAY .. 1. January 2005 F5J Extreme
- First F5J Extreme in 2005. I launched my AVA for 3
flights in -1,5 degrees celcius. First flight was just zero air and I used
22sec motor time (9:52 0-1m). That is good in the winter though I could have
landed later. I missed as usual how fast the model comes down with spoiler
and the rudder got a little banging. Second flight I found a lot of sink.
But with sink there should be a thermal and I found it. Not enough to go up
but as long as I stayed in it I kept my altitude (9:58, 0-1m and 17sec motor
run). Last flight and I found thermals gain but the disappeared and I had to
find a new one upwind (10:00, 18sec and 18sec motor run). I did cheat a bit
today. The ice I am flying on is very slippery so the screw that attach the
nose cone was changed to a longer one (see picture). This makes the landings
wintertime a bit easier. Without it I would probably not have landing points
at all.
I also flew the Shockflyer with a heavy 3x1050mah HET and a 2x700mah Kokam.
To me the Shockflyer was almost the same plane even with the heavier pack
(tot 240g). With 2x700 it is enough power the first minute and then it is
not more than needed to get out of hover due to cold batteries.
DAY .. 1. January 2005
- New years day. Or atleast a few minutes over
midnight. My SX3 became the rocket this year. 8sec shots on my camera. My
wife operated the switch numerous times :-) A blast of fun... Not really any
supershot but some cool ones for my diary. I was hovering and flying when
the clock banged. Good way to spend new years eve...
January - Won the first F5J extreme postal
competition and first flights of both my new Brio and Superior. 9 days of flying
in total February - New Pike Superior, won Arnborg F3J
winter flying (Denmark) and bought a Caracho as a spare F3B-model March -
Good practice on the ice, Indoor and Fagernes Air
show April - DS three times, new and bigger Brio for
F3J, electro fuse for Superior/Brio and the AVA May -
Won two F3J competitions - one of them with my
Brio Giant. 3 days of F3B flying and I got to be speedmaster. June - National cup F3J and fun F3J event. Won all
rounds! Jane and Paul came from Czech Republic to visit. July - F3B, Denmark, some visiting of Dave Reese and
Bob Bingham and start of WC F3J August -
WC F3J, Bob on visit,
"new" Shongololo September - Indoor season started, built my first
DLG (not good for the back) and National Champion for the third time. October -
3 flights with AVA and some X-wing. Other than
that almost only Lierider and Edge.... It have been fun. November - - A lot of indoor again... Lierider
and 3DX but also small test of new Volz digital December - Lots of indoor / outdoor stuff again.
SX3, Lierider, 3DX and Shockflyer. But also AVA and Brio on the ice. January 2005 - Winter is on but good flying on
the ice and indoor. 6 days with sailplanes, even some slope flying. February 2005 - Started editing
