DAY ..
28. July - 2004
- Last day of practice and we finally got Alex's X-machin tuned in. Alex
soon got a grip on that machine at that "mean machine" and we had apx 12-13
starts on it. It flew well and wee now feel that we now the feeling of high
altitude. flewe my Pike Brio (with extensions) and Alx also tossed my
Vctor Zero a few starts (because hee wanted to know how high he could throw
it with Lolo onboard). H managed 12-14m with it. Thats ok in this altitude.

DAY ..
27. July - 2004
- Off to Klanten airport to check Alex's new X-machine. Weather was nice and
2-3m/s sidewind. Sadly the Rx that Alex had got did not work properly so we
did not get to fly it. After getting home we changed it to a similar I got
and then it was ok. Guess he will need to send back his brand new Rx. Anyhow
we had a great day with lots of flying and Alex suddenly understood that
yes it was very different to fly at this altitude. We had a lunch break
midday and had a good barbeque with hamburgers.

DAY ..
26. July - 2004
- Junior competitor Alexander Svenning came down south to prepare for
the worlds F3J. He has a Giga 2000 and a brand new X-machine. The
X-machine (A RaceM with X21 X-tail fuse) was not ready so we had to work
in my workshop for some hours. We finished at 03:00 and went to bed. As
you see Alexander with food and planes in a cellar is just what he
likes...
DAY ..
25. July - 2004 DS
- The weather forecast said 10m/s from west in th mountains so I prepared
for some DS at Beitostølen. Arild came with me and we had a good time even
though the wind never went above 5-6m/s. I flew my Opus and the Vector Zero
wing whil Arild operated the Camera. On the way down we stopped at a local
slope near Rogne and I flew the Caracho both frontside and a bit DS. But the
conditions were not good.

Weekends is not the best time to be at Klanten airport becaus of big
airplanes so I wanted som landing practice with my AVA instead. I went
to a local slope and could handthrow and st my timer for 30 seconds
landing. After 16seconds I needed to set my camera timer. To throw, set
timer, click camera and land on time makes good practice as it is much
to think about and one gets "stressed". As you see I got a lot of good
landings within a few seconds each time. I also landed too late many
times but with practice I got better. I probably landed 30 times before
I wewent home. |

22. July - 2004
-
Went up to Klanten at 19:00 for a evening flight. Some small raindrops fell
on my models so it gave me a good chance too check my settings for this kind
of weather in this altitude. And there was no problems. Good times with both
Superior and my Giant Brio. I also testflew a prototype of an F3B model I
got my hands on. It is made in Norway and is heavy and not super built like
we are used to. But after 3 flights it actually flew well in speed.

DAY ..
21. July - 2004
-
What a great day! Met up with Espen, Dave, Darcy and Bob on Beitostølen. We
headed for Slettefjell that is a pretty big slope with 800m down into the
valley. The conditions were perfect for thermal slope soaring. This means
that the thermals drive it all and you will experience big sink when the
thermal is gone. After 3-4 hours we had a small barbeque at the top before
we headed back to Beitostølen and dinner. We went to Smørkollen for some DS
action but the wind was not with us. The others flew small JW wings while I
tried to rip the Opus. Bob also got a few laps with my Opus before we headed
further into the mountains. We stopped at a lake called Vinstre and flew
some electric. Espen flew his helicopter (Joker electric 37v) and tried to
get some video of Bob and Dave flying formation with the Majko's. I flew my
X-wing in a river canyon and flew low over and uner a bridge. It was a cool
day and we finished of with food and some drinks at a local restaurant.
Thanks for meeting you guys!

DAY .. 18. July - 2004 -
Legoland, Denmark
- Yesterday we were in Legoland and that is a wonder world built up by Lego.
It is well worth the visit to Denmark if you havae kids up to 10-12 years
even though I did get tired and relaxed in the car for some time. Today we
headed to south Fyn and found a nice little slope for my Organic. Only
2-3m/s wind but warm with temperature in the range 20-25 degrees celcius
anad sun. We were thinking of going to Jan Hansen (F3B pilot) but stayed at
Fyn since the weather forecast was not good. Jan lives down south and we had
planned a trip to Sylt (Germany).
Right now all I can think about is my trip to Canada. Have you read this
WC's "Gossip column" by our good uncle in F3J Sydney Lennson ?
Read it HERE. For Canada look
also at www.F3X.no . I will
be online with WLAN (probably free for all on channel 11 for all you going)
from the tower rooms at Red Deer Lodge.

16. July - 2004 -
Legoland, Denmark
- Of on a holiday with my familly to Denmark and Legoland. More familly
pictures later at Eurofoto but here are what I managed to get of flying
:-) After coming to Denmark we headed to Odense that is on Fyn. Just
before we took the bridge to Fyn I took a look at the map and looked for
some small "Klinter". That is small slopes made by the sea as Denmark is
almost all sand. The biggest slope in Denmark is on the east coast and
is 147m high. This one was only 5-10m high but with 1m/s wind it is
enough for my Organic. I sloped for a while before the wind shifted and
I had to get out the small bungee (10m rubber and 10m line). I soared
some thermals and even got a little DS down in the slope.
In the evening we went to a local farmers field to show our host familly
the Organic (Thanks to Helle, Frank, Mie and Mads). Picture to the left
by Helle. She good at taking photos btw and they have lived in Norway
for 5 months. Pitty I had set my camera for some settings she did not
know about... |

DAY .. 10. July - 2004 -
F5J Extreme
- First day of the Extreme F5J and the weather was not like our
meteorologist said. It should have been rain, 15m/s wind and falling
temperatures. It was much better with sun and 23degrees celcius. But they
did get something right. The wind did change in an "extreme way". I live in
a valley and if I dont go to the mountains I will have to fly on a farmers
field down in the valley. The wind was 0-2m/s from the south so I found a
field that was ok but with some winds coming over some trees that could give
me some difficult landings. The AVA was put togheter with B50-6S and 10
cells 1000mah (old GMVIS from 2001). I spotted a thermal and went for it
with only 2 seconds of motortime. I found the thermal and followed it
downwind for 5 min giving me an altitude of apx 200m and apx 500m away. Then
the wind changed!! The wind suddenly came from the North-east and down to
create huge sink. I searched as hard as I could for a new thermal and tried
to get "home" with no luck. I had to use 29 extra seconds of motor just to
get home. There was no way I could fly here anymore as the wind picked up to
3-4m/s downwind...
So
I went to the other side of the valley and found a new farmers field. The
wind was 3-4m/s so I had some hard landings that broke my elevator seating
but I did manage to fly the two last rounds and got good points. Man it was
fun. I love it when it gets difficult :-)
The detailed results are:
1.round 9:59, 0-1 landing and 31sec motortime,
2.round 9:59, 0-1 landing and 9sec motortime
3.round 10:00, 0-1 landing and 10sec motortime
This gives a total of 1840,5points

F5J Extreme
- One/two days to the next F5J postal event.
You can also enter by clicking on the
VI-competition on this site and state that you will fly.
The weather forecast here at my place in Norway are terrible but I will fly
if I find an opening in the clouds...
DAY ..
8. July - 2004
- Today we went to Klanten airport (820m) and
flew some electrics. Per Arne with Organic (that we finished repairing
yesterday) and me with AVA. The conditions were "orgasmic" from the morning
with strong thermals all places. Later in the day there was also strong
sink. I had Lolo onboard my AVA to see the launch speed with 10 and 6 cells.
I used the Hacker B50-6S, 6,8:1 and 17x13 Aeronaut prop. I launched both
times 18seconds and the speed was 12,2m/s (high 12,8) with 10 cells and 6
cells 7,4m/s (high 8m/s). In sink the speed was down to 6,4m/s. Picture of
Lolo here, Lolo readings
here
In our local competitions for
electro we have a motor and cell factor and for launching to 100m both
setups are actually equal to points in the competition. But 6 cells gives a
little bit lighter model.
DAY .. 7. July - 2004 - DS
- A new day with endless possibilities. We
ended up on Beitostølen (me, my uncle and my son) flying DS. The conditions
were first a bit bumpy but then it smoothened out and I flew the Opus
until it fluttered (should change a servo soon). It was nice weather and on
the back of the slope we could even sit in t-shirt if we wanted to. On the
front side we needed clothes as the wind was 10-15m/s at the most. I think
it was a great day in the mountain and my uncle have said the same 4 times
now :-)

DAY ..
6. July - 2004
-
My uncle Per Arne Nilsen is visiting and
today we wanted to go up to the mountains for some flying on the airfield
Klanten. On the way up there wee found rain... So we turned around and down
into the valley again. As always the heat down in the valley gives a lot of
thermal activity and therefore the clouds have to give space for some sun
also (thermals pushes the clouds away). So we stopped at a farmer that had
just cut the grass and flew the AVA for a spin. I used the electro version
with 6 cells and flew for a good 20min before we got hungry and went home.
In the evening we repaired Per Arne's Organic V-tail that had got a good
beating on the competition in Larvik last weekend. According to Per Arne the
competition was held in strong wind on a airfield with high hills on many
sides. This gave some nasty conditions and his model picked a fence. Now we
have replaced all the balsa airfoils and are ready for covering.

DAY .. 5. July - 2004
- I have 50 prachutes in storage and ready
for sale. They are VERY well done and made in Czech Republic. They will
withstand hard F3B starts without braking (I have starte 319m) and is according to the FAI
standards (5dm2). The price on these 50 are really low. 12EUR or 100Nkr +
shipping (can be sent with normal post). Send me a email if you want one (or
two...): jo@grini.no
DAY .. 4. July - 2004
- F3B BAH
- i drove Jane and Paul to Oslo for the bus
to Czech Republic and since Espen Bakke had been asking me nice to get ready
start lists and run the results on this years BAH F3B I said yes. OK I said
I am finished with F3B but since I was there I had to fly also... The
weather was not good and we had to stop a lot of times because of the rain.
We also had a few reflights and one of them was my fault. On the first one I
saved a model by running the line under Geir Stømstad's Superior. He caught
a line during distance and had to spin around the turnarounds while I ran
under with the line.
The model landed just fine. The man who launched was
Stein Jaksland and I think the A-base guys were so much looking at the
"caught" model that they forgot to give him signals at base A. In another
flight I sat at A-base and I forgot to ring
Gjermund Westad in at A-base (had ringed out). He got it 50m too late and in distance that only gives him an advantage normally
(more time to fly). After he had
flown the task (that he lost we a few legs) he wanted a reflight. He got it
offcourse just like I should have got it in last f3B at Rena. When a official helper does a mistake one should
have reflight. Anyhow we only did one round because of the rain and I did a
mistake in my distance leaving me out of the top places. But I did a good
job in the rain for speed and got to be the speedmaster again. My Brio seems
to give ok results no matter what the conditions are. I almost lost it in
the duration when my battery went dead. It seems that a cell is gone
suddenly or maybe going bad. Will have to check thourougly and replace
anyhow. I lost over 100m but managed to get control. I was a bit worried
there for a time you might say!!! I managed to charge beetween every flight
the rest of the day and all went well.

DAY .. 3. July - 2004
- This weekend the clubmembers stay in tents
at our local airfield. It is supposed to be very fun although I have not
been there at late night... But I was there in the daytime and made sure
thata Frank Olav got the first flight of the day. He needed a chair,
sunglasses and my AVA to relax :-O I also flew a few flights and our
airfield does never dissapoint me. There is always thermals here and even my
son found one with the AVA and school cable to his radio.
Later in the day Jane and Paul arrived. We had dinner, played crocket and
watched all the pictures they had taken. There was a lot of great pictures.
They said they would have wanted better weather but the pictures showed a
lot of nice places. Seems that they had a nice trip. Offcourse this summer
has not been great and supere warm yet but this is Norway - not Greece...
Here are some pictures from the trip.

DAY .. 1. July - 2004
- Got the E-AVA running today. Ordered some
cheap Waypoint 150MG servos from Griffin Models yesterday and they arrived
today. They did not fit but I installed them anyhow... Actually I dont know
what servos will fit in the E-AVA. According to Barry Kennedy there should
be room for some Hitec 125 but there were not. So possibly one needs to buy
some small Graupner 261 or something but I dont like to have so small servos
on all moving elevators. I installed my Hacker B50-6S and a Aeronaut 17x13
propeller. Since this motor is a bit heavy for the planes CG I made a Rx
pack of 4x700nimh that went down the carbon boom together with a Shulze Rx.
Then I can use as many cells as I want but started out with 6 cells CP1700.
The weight is now without battery 1350g and with drive battery 1650g. Went
outside at 21:30 (yes I live so much north that the midnight sun have a bit
effect) and had two launches. The model went well and had a lot more
"travel-speed" than usual as the weight is now higher. Still managed an
average of 6-8min from launch height. For those who have one I used a CG at
100mm.
Jane and Paul from Samba are now on the west coast and have been to
Haugesund visiting Arild and Rolf Inge. They have seen some ok DS'ing I
think and have been fishing and eating crab and fish from the sea. Last I
heard they were up north above Bergen.
At last a message to Mainne's wife: Good to hear that you read my diary!
Then you can follow your husband. Do you want to see some really mean
pictures of him ?... I dont think I have any... But he should go to
Canada!!!!
