DAY .. 28. June - 2003
High pressure building up over Norway and there is no wind. Pitty because now I want some slope action. I went to Storefjell and took out the Spacewolf and a small bungee. Got myself a few trips and some slope/thermal activity. Not super but enough to have a good time.

     DAY .. 27. June - 2003
Today the "whole" family went to the slope. 23 degrees outside and only thermals moving the air around us. I brought the Organic that have not been used in a while... Had to realign the V-tail as usual (Hitex 81 is not good on neutral) and did a fatal mistake on the radio. After calibrating the left servo on the v-tail I probably pushed Reverse-button instead of the Enter-button and - well need I say more!! The model flew well untill I used the elevator.... 30 seconds later the model touched ground and does not look as good as before. It can be fixed but needs a few hours in the workshop.

     DAY .. 26. June - 2003
After reading on Lomcovak that a German guy (Gunther Aichholzer) reached 1100m last weekend I just had to test how high that is. I rigged the winch and my Superior on Klanten airfield (818m above sealevel) and spotted a thermal comming thru. 9 minutes later I reached I height that I was pretty sure was around 1000m. I also took a few more flights and on the third flight I also reached a height that I thought was around 1000m. I was WRONG! The first flight was 727m and the third one was 739m. Pitty I did not bring the computer because now I have to give it a new test. I want to beat the 1100m :-) Anyhow did take some snapshots to see if I could catch it on a photo. My camera has 10x optical zoom and a max of 3200x2400 but hey that little cross on the sky.......
For those that want more info look at the Storefjell/Leirin weatherreport i snatched
(the test was done beetween 12:30 and 14:00 today):

I also found myself in the newspaper today (see picture)

     DAY .. 22. June - 2003
On the way back home we spotted some guys with electric sailplanes at Brekke near the E18 road. Me and Aril Røsvik stopped and watched but had flown enough this weekend.... It was nice guys with ok sailplanes that seemed to work. They talked alot about thermals and showed us were and when the thermal activity was best at this airport. We listened and watched and it was nice to hear and see that other people also is devoted to thermal flying. BTW we did not say that we had been on the nationals F3J..... :-)

     DAY .. 22. June - 2003 National champion Jo Grini !
Last day of the nationals F3J. Last two rounds of the preliminary and finals. Just had to test the Brio also and it works also great in F3J. Gave me full 1000 points and the start in F3J is superfast!!
Finals: Oh I love finals! 4 rounds and no throw out in this championship. One thing I did have in mind was last years WC in Finland when I fell from 15 to 38th place because I landed 0,5second to late. Today I wanted to land a few seconds earlier each time. First final did not give us full answer but one pilot had bad landing. Second final was also full time on all pilots. Third final: Now the guys are showing weakness. One landed out and the next at only 4:39. Fourth final was to be the final battle: We all started in the middle of the course since there was a big dark cloud there. It held us up 6-7 minutes but then it was over. I had before the round spotted a nice blue field between the clouds and was ready to jump there when people where away from me. After 8 minutes I took the chance and found the thermal at once. Sadly one of the others came after me but he missed the thermal. Finally I was alone on the sky and knew I was this years champion if I just landed. It was 5 looooong minutes jumping up and down - smiling and laughing. This was my second gold medal in F3J nationals - both with the Pike Superior. I will like to thank my team mates and all that helped me to get the gold this time. And off course Samba Model and the officials that made it possible.
BTW As you can see of the times the conditions were pretty good so I feel that this championship was not about what model to use. And at the same time it was not about seconds and landing. It was pure and cool thermal flying at its best.

     DAY ..
21. June - 2003
First day of nationals F3J. 6 preliminary rounds were completed and 18 competitors are trying to get to the 6 places in the finals. Tomorrow there will be 2 more preliminary rounds and 4 finals. My first 6 rounds was full time and I have only given away 4 points of 6000 :-) Today I flew the Superior all the rounds. The barbeque was great and we had some great laughs before the bed was next.
     DAY ..
20. June - 2003
Arrived at Spydeberg for this weekends National Championship F3J. Lots of people here already and I flew the Brio some flights before the barbeque was more important....

     DAY .. 19. June - 2003
One of my photos was elected "today's photo" at Eurofoto. Look at THIS LINK

     DAY ..
18. June - 2003
Very little flying in the weekdays as my back hurts. But I think I am ready for this weekends National championship in F3J. I will leave for the championship on Friday and the two day comp. will end sometime late Sunday.
If I have time I will update results during the weekend. Look HERE

     DAY .. 15. June - 2003
Club Competition in the club Cirrus and 16 competitors were ready for action. The rules were a 21min thermal competition that goes over 3 rounds. It is almost like LSF thermal duration but with spot and not a line to land on. After 3 rounds I had only given away 20 landing points and nailed 100% in the duration. I guess I won the damn thing :-) Anyhow I flew the Superior X-tail and the conditions was in times very good. Thorbjørn Jespersen showed of his new Fazer and it looked OK. 3,17m - HQ2/8. Looks much like the Eraser but with new fuse and diff. profile.
Results and more Norwegian txt can be found at Cirrus-page.
Some more photos can be found at EUROFOTO.

     DAY .. 14. June - 2003
Arrived at Spydeberg around 14:00 and the winch was set up. Had a some long flights during the day and evening together with Finn Bergstrøm and Alf Erik Ross. I flew mostly the Brio and there was good conditions. In the evening me and Finn had some barbeque and I even got a flight with the Majko.

     DAY .. 12. June - 2003
Some practice before this weekends Club Championship in Cirrus was what I wanted today. The Brio got some flights and I finished of with the Superior. Cant really figure out what model to fly. Anyhow the rain stopped me after 5 flights and I was confident with both models.

    DAY .. 8. June - 2003
06:00 and it is time to get up! Last day of Ørebro Open is staring at 09:00 and I am already tired... Can one be tired of modeling :-) Anyhow we were all ready with our planes looking at dark clouds from inside of Germund Westad's big igloo (double tent suitable even for north pole). But the weather was nice to us and after some hours the sun said hey you need some sun-tan NOW. The day was great for me I think because I found that my Brio went faster and better for every slug of lead I put in. It seemed that I had flown it all too light and that the profile actually can be loaded just as much as any other profile for F3B. My third round of speed was the turning point I think because I loaded 900g of lead and flew really fast. Too bad I took a chance and made a cut at B-base.... ended up taking a full turn and 23,53... The thermals in strong wind was also cool because 2030g (weight with V-tail fuse) was no problem at all in the strong wind. But one thing is for sure. I am a F3J-pilot and needs lots of more practice in F3B. I ended up as number 4 among the 9 Norwegians.
After 4 rounds were completed we all packed up and were waiting for the results. Congratulations to Pasi Vaisanen that became the winner. Speedmaster was Peter Hubbertz and best team was Germany 1.
I think many of the guys stayed to the next day and some drinking after the competition was over. We went home and I was home after 1350km of driving both ways around 01:30 in the night.
I think you will enjoy the 49 great pictures in the Eurofoto album and the results are HERE

    DAY .. 7. June - 2003
05:30 and I cant sleep. I have been thinking F3B all week and is too much hyped up I think. Breakfast at 06:30 and on the field for first flight at 08:30. The wind was blowing steadily behind the treeline at Pilengen with gusts at 6-8m/s and 36 pilots were ready. There were pilots from Germany, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden for this Eurotour event F3B. Many of the best pilots in the world are here every year and it is hard competition. It seems to me that the level of F3B in Norway is rising but we still have more practice to reach the international level. We were 9 pilots from Norway this year and with 9 winches we were well prepared except for the line thickness...
It is ALWAYS good to be a Norwegian in Sweden - at least when going to sailplane competitions. The club Ikarus had prepared all the necessary needs for a competition pilot. The girls were the big clue here. Nice girls - always smiling - knows how everything works - did I say that the contest director were a girl ? And offcourse with a smiling line manager thru the beard. After 2 1/4 round we finished today's flights and enjoyed a nice barbeque at the site.
Looking at the listings I was now at 18 of 36 competitors. This I was rather happy with since I consider myself a novice in F3B and with a new plane that needed some tuning. I was very pleased with the Brio today. It starts very nice and thermalling is a piece of cake. I also feel that I have almost dialled in the speed setting but are missing a bit in the distance.
So what was new and what other things happened ?
- The Swedes have prepared a new winch that looked nice.
- The Swedes have a "new" Race Machine going. It is slightly bigger (20cm bigger wing and longer tail)
- Widar Holmedal broke his model on start
- Dan Eriksen blew his brand new big Racemachine in pieces when he hit Gerd Weber's Caracho ? in Distance
- There were finally white T-shirts!!

    DAY .. 6. June - 2003
Arrived in Ørebro and started some practice at the local airfield. The weather is nice but strong wind makes strong lines needed. We started to wonder if we had enough strong lines for this event.... I flew the Brio 3 flights and Ronny flew his New Sting (Calligula). Ronny have not flown F3B for a long time so we did practice some speed.
In the night we went to a local Vietnamese restaurant and had a beer and some good food before we turned in at Ibis hotel.

Quick note:
- This weekend I will be in Ørebro Open - Eurotour F3B in Sweden. I will not win - but I will kick ass!
- Nice words from Pierre, so here are the link of his great page: http://pierre.rondel.free.fr

    DAY ..
4
. June - 2003
Should have just relaxed but hey - nice weather (20 degrees and 0-2m/s wind) and lots of planes in the car. Klanten airport next and both the Pike Superior and the Brio came out of the car. Flew 2 speeds and 3 distances before I finished it of with a 50min thermal flight. It is great to be a pilot in these conditions isn't it ?

    DAY .. 3. June - 2003 Brio throws
No there were no flying today. But I did measure the throws on my Brio. Go to the Brio throw-page to set up your Brio. The throws are not 100% finished but a good starting point I think. To see other technical things you might also read the may-part of my diary. To order one go to my Pike-page.

    DAY .. 1. June - 2003 Almost 40 starts!
Today I had great hopes for some real F3B speed-practice. And guess what we had. Erik Morgan Villadsen, Widar Holmedal and Gjermund Westad from the national team F3B were there and offcourse me. Gjermund had brought the superduper F3B equipment that he and Bjørn Kjellberg have designed. This Equipment makes it possible to have a F3B-event anywhere and anytime. But not only that. It also logs all data you can get and shows it on a laptop. This means that for speed that we were practicing today we could see not only the correct speedtime but also time from launch, time in dive, time on each leg and offcourse you will never hear the buzz if your working time is over or the 60sec from launch is over.

Gjermund with his Phønix

At 9:00 the equipment was up and running and we started a day with practice that I will not forget. The day was perfect poor starting conditions the first 1-2hour but with good and pretty even conditions the rest of the day. When my clock showed apx. 20:00 we ended todays practice and on the laptop a great number of 95 starts were logged. We did have more starts but not all were logged of diff. reasons.
Having this equipment makes it perfect to test new things and to learn a lot about how and why a speed goes slow and / or fast. For myself I had a goal for the day. The goal was to test the Brio against the Spacewolf and also to be stable with speeds around 20-21seconds. I got both goals tested really good and was happy with the results.
There is no doubt that I can get more speed out of the Brio than I can from the Spacewolf. I also found that the Brio went faster with V-tail than with X-tail. But this has also something to do with the conditions getting better when I changed to V-tail. I am not sure why but it think the V-tail is less drag (it is smaller in area) and that it might give me more punch in the turns. I am not sure what to use on next weekends Eurotour event in Sweden (Ørebro Open) because I love the way the X-tail moves in distance and thermal... But I think it will be the V-tail.
The best of the day was that I did not have one single flight that I got a bad start, missed a turn or something like that. That is also why I am very happy with the day. It is very important to be able to complete a full competition without any mistakes. There are not always a second chance...

You can download all the times HERE - download how we got better through the day HERE

January - Not extremely much flying this month but many flights with many planes. Biggest of the month was the new video "Pike-launch". It should be well worth the download of 13,5mb
February
- What a trip we had. 10 days in Europe visiting many of the finest developers. Learned incredibly much.
March - Back from the trip and tested the new X-tail for Superior. Came third in the first event with 24 comp. Majko was cool and Fagernes Flyshow was a spectacular event with over 100 pilots.
April - Great month and the spring is coming. Pike Mini with Superior tips is great - Great DS in Haugesund - and first session this year on my local DS-slope.
May - Wow what a month. Jean was here - speed training - Yellow Eagle Trophy - Spacewolf and most important my new Pike Brio. I think I am ready for the summer now!
June - Jihaa! I got to be National champion F3J for the second time. I was also practising a lot with my new Brio and went to Ørebro Open (Eurotour F3B). I also became Club Champion in the club Cirrus.
July - Got gold medal in the Team and 7th overall in Nordic Championship. Crashed my Brio in F3B and had plenty of friends stopping by for longer and shorter time. New personal best of 17,68s in speed F3B and my first flight with Paraglider. Also pretty irritating that I am not at EC F3J....
August - 3x12 electro (1st), LSF at Vingen (1st), F3J at Nome (1st) and Hollandglide F3J (did not win..). But a great month with lots of flying and lots of good feedback from Hollandglide.
September - Started editing...
