DAY .. 31. May - 2003
Spydeberg was the place today. Tomorrow Gjermund Westad is coming with full F3B equipment and we will have full practice F3B speed. Today we just arrived and got some flights on the winch in nice weather.
I flew both the Pike Brio (with X-tail) and the Spacewolf for some flights. There were also a full fleet of Graphite's out today. My uncle Per Arne Nilsen flying Graphite, Alf Erik Ross flying Graphite, Jan Bratbak flying Graphite.... Nice machine and the big brother of my Organic. Some other guys were also there.
In the evening me and Gjermund went to Askim for some food and a beer. I think we turned in at the clubhouse around 01:00....

        DAY .. 30. May - 2003
More Brio on Klanten airport. Today I wanted to check the V-tail fuse. This fuse can be equipped with two different V-tails. Two different sizes are available. The weather was really nice with 16 degrees and a 4-6m/s wind. Lots of thermal activity (again).
I first started with the big as that is what I normally fly with on my Superior. The handling was very good and I could fly the speed in Neutral (CG 108mm) and also the thermal (CG 105mm). When flying speed with CG at 105mm it straightened out slowly along the 150m and just a small amount of down elevator was needed to trim.
After 4-5 starts I changed to the smaller V-tail. The handling was mostly the same but in slow thermal I needed to fly a little more aggressive to get the same tight turns. The smaller V-tail will probably give less drag and therefore also faster in the speed. Personally I would prefer the bigger V-tail as I am a F3J-pilot...
BTW I think I have almost apx 40 flights now!

        DAY .. 28. May - 2003
The summer is finally here. 19,5 degrees outside and 0-2m/s wind.
Started the day on Klanten airport again. Apx. 10 starts today with the Brio and it was good to have some extra tests in calm weather. I tested a lot on different CG but ended up at 105mm. Great lift but also "great" sink. Could sometimes fly a speed and thermal up for a new one just minutes later.

18:00 - Just had to get out after dinner.... The local slope in Fagernes was great with thermal lift that had been developing thru the whole day. Over 1 hour flying in pretty good lift.

        DAY .. 27. May - 2003
Today I was eager to test more on the winch so me and my Brio went to Klanten airport again for some serious practice. The weather was ok with 4-6m/s wind 30-50 degrees crosswind. I did 10 flights speed and 2 thermal but actually it became more thermalling because after each speedrun I had enough energy to do more flying. Spotting thermals and slopeflying on a treeline gave me extra flying time each flight. I am now sure and confident that the Brio also can be used in F3B. This because all the speedflights today and all the downwind turns were good by my standards.
Today I also got to test diff. CG's. I ended up with thermal 105mm and speed at 108mm. It was still gentle at 113mm but I think that is too much backwards. Half of the flights today was with 450g lead. Mostly I flew in neutral (also speed) but with 3mm thermalflap in good lift. Other values: apx 4-5mm kickflap | startflap 8-10mm | aileron 15/8-10mm | flap (as aileron) 10/5mm

        DAY .. 26. May - 2003
Today I was not sure what to do! According to the F3F-list Craig Toutolmin made a 202mph DS-session today. Later Dave Reese made 206mph. This is very fast for a sailplane just using the natures great opportunities so I just had to go DS'ing today. Well I should have gone winch'ing instead.... Me and my friend Håkon Sæbu (paragliderpilot) came to my local DS-spot at 13:00 and the wind was steady at 14m/s. 14m/s is normally to much to DS on this slope but I just had to try. Frontside was great but hey that's not why I was there... On the backside it was really turbulent and my Brio was shuffled around like a small boat on a big sea. After 3-4 runs suddenly
my new Brio went spinning to the ground. Thank god there was still snow around in the mountain! The model was unharmed thnx to the snow. It was just to pack it up and walk down again. Now I know that +10m/s is too much backside on this slope..
Further down the valley is was less wind and we had a great time on a small slope with my Majko. This place (Rogne samvirkelag) also has a small DS-slope and I managed to flutter the Majko a few times... After 30min flying we went home for dinner and I think Håkon will fly his paraglider later when the wind calms in the evening.

        DAY .. 24. May - 2003 BRIO
Wow - first flights tonight!
I know one should be careful not to draw conclusions on a new model after just 3 flights but hey... This diary is for my own abuse and every word here is just so that I know "what I have done and where I did it". It is a diary not anything else.
Anyhow:

I arrived at Klanten airfield (apx 800m above sealevel) at 18:30 in some rain and 3-4m/s wind. The temperature was only 8 degrees and the conditions was a long way from perfect. But the winch was set up and the pedal went down. Good launch height and neutral flap on. After flying around about in 4min there were good indication on thermals (or weak lift). 3mm thermal flap seemed good and 3 different thermals later (had to try the distance in sink also) I was still up there and my timer said 15min had gone. I had turned hard - I had flown pretty fast distance - It was still the smooth and easy to fly plane I had ever hoped for. One thing is for sure: This baby thermals with ease. I also tested 2 speedruns. One empty and one with 500g lead. It turned fast and I need to get the CG backwards I think.. Stand by for more details the next days.
First impressions is that the 7,5% airfoil is better than I thought in thermal and there is still a big smile on my face :-)

        DAY ..

. May - 2003
Spent 120km in the car today looking for a slope with the right wind. Could have gone winching but hey - I need to check the slopes if they are free of snow. Sadly there was either wrong wind or the road was closed due to rain.
At 21:00 I just had to fly a little bit. And what a flight! The Majko was thrown into the sunrise and I had a great time in the late night. Did you know that there are even thermals this late at night? I had over 30min flying time on just 2min motortime - wow. At first I just noticed that the air was really difficult in one area of the field. Then suddenly it got just calm and the Majko went higher and higher for a while. It was really cool to see this so late in the night.

        DAY .. 18. May - 2003
F3J Cup at Spydeberg. 2-5m/s, thermals, 19 competitors.
Dont think I have to say so much.. 4 preliminary rounds and 2 finals gave: 4000 + 2000 points. I feel good!! And I just love my Superior! Be sure to check the results and writing at : F3J.no and Cirrus (nor txt).

        DAY .. 17. May - 2003
National day in Norway. I managed to get away at about 15:00 and cruised down to Spydeberg (230km). Here I met Torbjørn Jespersen and we had a nice evening in splendid weather. Torbjørn used a bungee to get his Eraser and Sharon up while I used winch. I had to "brake" me down just so that we could have a small fight in the low sunlight. Great day and I went to sleep really early.

        DAY .. 14. May - 2003
A nice day on the slope at Storefjell. Not perfect conditions but 5-6m/s, 4 degrees and a bit snow now and then. But the Spacewolf was in the air with 700g of lead (total 2800g) and I had a nice hour in the air. Actually it was good in the mountains today (I was at 1020m) because in the valley it was raining instead of snowing.

Those of you interested in F3B the results of the Speed and Distance seminar is now available at Løten model club's pages. To get a quick look at all the speeds check HERE

17 pilots in Herrljunga

Conny's Graphite

        DAY .. 9-11. May - 2003
Friday:
I arrived in Herrljunga at 13:00 and met Ronny Sandslett and Aril Røsvik that had come all the way from Tromsø in car to get here. Tromsø is apx. 2000km away - one way..... Now that is cool! We started some practice on the winch in nice weather and wind at apx. 5-7m/s. We got a lot of good airtime and even spotted that a single tree that was on the field could be used as a small slope. according to the Lolo I stayed over 4min on that single tree. This was to be an important discovery the next day... In the evening we had some pizza and showed some video to others Swedes also spending the night in the clughouse of Herrljunga modelclub. I also did some nightflying offcourse. The Toro 300 was abused.

Saturday:
Up at 8:00 and competition day. This is the third time I am in Herrljunga and it is always great. Nice guys - good weather - good organisation of the competition and the chance to compete against other good F3J-pilots.
Today we woke up to nice weather but the forcast said strong wind and some rain during the day. The wind became very strong and we also had a small rainshower in round 5. Us Norwegians used two-man pulley and guess what - 1,3 line was not strong enough today. We did try one man with pulley but Ronny was "thrown" 3m back. The only way not to have a linebreak was one man direct running (or maybe even stronger line). We also got a "burn-off" when another line came on top of my own line when launching. This can make a new starting time but we never bothered to claim it.
The single tree we found yesterday was used by me several times to get some extra time in the air but strangely enough no one else tried it (ok it was difficult). 17 pilots competed in 5 rounds and there were 2 finals with 5 pilots. Ronny did very well in the wind with his New Sting (Big Sting) and ended up 2nd preliminary and 3rd in the finals. very good Ronny! Aril did also well with his Stratos but had to change model in round 4 and had a big problem in the wind with his Dynamik. Myself - well I did pretty well BUT... I did a big mistake in round 3 that left me with 0 points there. I was cooling it of in front and watched Rolf-Erik Blomdahl following a thermal way back in the strong wind. I was eager to get a 1000 and not just 8-900points so I followed Mattias Carlsson when he picked a thermal behind some trees. Mattias had a light machine so he had to stop early and land way out but I guessed there should be no problem for me as long as the thermal was strong... I was wrong! After climbing just 50-100m I watched my plane 5-600m back and understood I had a problem. I came almost home but probably outside 75m. I did not bother to measure but stated that I was outside 75m and a zero point in that round. This left me outside the final (and probably nice money prizes). Well anything can be done when looking at numbers afterwards :-)
The coolest thing was the winner. With an "old fashioned" Nordic (that weighs 2,8kg and is made the "old" way with 7037 profile) Patrik Johansson flew safe and cool in front of the field. Nobody noticed him almost at all. But he blew his flapservo in round 3 - taped it - won preliminary and also the final! And with a X-347 radio he was the ultimate champion. Big congrats from me - it was way cool to see that one can win with "normal" equipment as I see it.

Anyhow I had a superb time with you all and I will be there next year. Thnx to all of you that were there. Also a big thnx to the Blomdahl familiy that supplied shower and beer in the evening.
In the evening we flew some Toro 300, Adrenalin and Majko (if I remember correctly....)

Sunday:
Up at 8:00 again hmmm. I bought a Space Wolf of Conny Anderson and he bought a Pike Superior from me. I got 8 starts on the Space Wolf and it seems to be a great machine. The moulds are sadly destroyed I think because it flew well. Maybe I will "abuse" it in F3B in the future. (2,94m , 62dm2 , thinned RG-15 , 2,1kg)

Space Wolf as seen through Rolf Erik Blomdahl's glasses.
Conny sold me a Space Wolf and I sold him a Pike Superior.

        DAY .. 8. May - 2003
12 people ready for clubmeeting and training on Spydeberg. I was there and the weather was not good but the rain stopped and 3 of us got some great starts in the strong wind. We used both rubber bungee and winch and the starts with Lolo in were just superb. Widar Holmedal got a 314m start and I got a 306m. The wind was meassured at 5-7m/s but it was more up there I think. We used a Hollenbeck winch with 1,25speedline and a 450EN battery.
I stayed the night here and went to Herrljunga the next morning (Spydeberg is 200km from home and Herrljunga is even 300km more). Picture of me launching is taken by Widar Holmedal.

        DAY ..
7
. May - 2003
Just a "small" trip on a local slope in the middle of Fagernes. Great lift today and the Superior got good height just on slopelift. With 500g of ballast I had some "screaming" passes :-) Tomorrow I will go to Spydeberg for some practice and then to Herrljunga in Sweden for F3J-competition on Saturday.

        DAY .. 3-4. May - 2003
This weekend there was F3B training with many of the top F3B pilots in Norway. The national team was there and Løten model club had organized a great event with all times recorded on a laptop (equipment is courtesy of Gjermund Westad and Bjørn Kjellberg). Every competitor got their times recorded in every detail (each leg was recorded, entry time, time used in dive, etc.).
After each flight the trainer Espen Torp gave us good instructions on what to work on and there was no doubt I needed the practice. First day my speedtimes were at 20-24seconds but during day two I reached 18,7sec with my Superior and also 19,18sec with a borrowed X21. Fastest time Saturday was 17 something by Floppen and Sunday 18,3 seconds by Espen Torp. I was pretty stable and I did not have a single flight that was above 24sec or aborted. After two days and apx 18 flights it was good to get home. Thnx to Tor Midtlund that gave me a spare bed and to Løten model club that organized the event. Pictures at the Løten-site HERE.

        DAY .. 2. May - 2003
Real model pilots does everything to get a nice trip and some memories. Jean-Luc is one of them. He is a nice guy from France that happen to work in Norway for the moment. Jean likes: walking in the mountains - flying DS - good food - to smile. In other words: "Jean is a nice guy like us" :-) He also have a good idea about DS and profiles so eit what interesting to listen and discuss some theories. Today we entered the mountains near Beitostølen ( Smørkollen 1156m ) for some DS flying. There are still snow in the mountains but with determination, good clothes and some planes one can go far... Jean is now "King of the landings" after 3 silk smooth landings in the back of the DS slope. Myself - well... After some DS my Opus suddenly made some strange wiggling before it took 4 rolls straight into the slope! Luckily I hit some soft ground so strange enough there were very little damage. After looking at the aileronservo I could see that the output gear had been crushed. Anything can happen in DS!!
After some hours on the slope we went further down the valley and checked out a nice little slope with DS possibilities. The wind was not right but we had a nice time throwing DLG and landing my Pike Superior down into the valley.... When we came down to collect the plane the farmer had brought the Superior back home and put it into his cellar!!

January - Not extremely much flying this month but many flights with many planes. Biggest of the month was the new video "Pike-launch". It should be well worth the download of 13,5mb
February
- What a trip we had. 10 days in Europe visiting many of the finest developers. Learned incredibly much.
March - Back from the trip and tested the new X-tail for Superior. Came third in the first event with 24 comp. Majko was cool and Fagernes Flyshow was a spectacular event with over 100 pilots.
April - Great month and the spring is coming. Pike Mini with Superior tips is great - Great DS in Haugesund - and first session this year on my local DS-slope.
May - Wow what a month. Jean was here - speed training - Yellow Eagle Trophy - Spacewolf and most important my new Pike Brio. I think I am ready for the summer now!
June - Jihaa! I got to be National champion F3J for the second time. I was also practising a lot with my new Brio and went to Ørebro Open (Eurotour F3B). I also became Club Champion in the club Cirrus.
July - Got gold medal in the Team and 7th overall in Nordic Championship. Crashed my Brio in F3B and had plenty of friends stopping by for longer and shorter time. New personal best of 17,68s in speed F3B and my first flight with Paraglider. Also pretty irritating that I am not at EC F3J....
August - 3x12 electro (1st), LSF at Vingen (1st), F3J at Nome (1st) and Hollandglide F3J (did not win..). But a great month with lots of flying and lots of good feedback from Hollandglide.
September - Started editing...
